Lightning from the skies

With its twin fuselages, sleek elegance and formidable performance, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning is one of the most emblematic aircraft of the Second World War. Nicknamed the ‘Fork-Tailed Devil’ by the Germans, this twin-engine fighter made history with its versatility and unique looks.

An icon of the Second World War

Designed by Lockheed in the late 1930s, the P-38 was the only American fighter to be produced for the duration of the war. Used in Europe and especially in the Pacific, it served as a fighter, photo reconnaissance aircraft, long-range escort and even fighter-bomber.

One of its most famous exploits was the interception of the plane belonging to Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor, in April 1943. Thanks to its exceptional range and speed, the P-38 was able to carry out this mission successfully, marking a turning point in the Pacific war.

The Flying Bulls's P-38

The P-38 Lightning presented by the Flying Bulls, based in Salzburg, Austria, is one of the rare examples still in flying condition in the world. Painted in the collection’s brilliant colours, this aircraft is fascinating for its impeccable condition, the result of exceptional restoration work.

The aircraft, registration number N25Y, was built in 1944 and restored in the United States before being acquired by the famous Austrian collection. It is regularly flown in aerial demonstrations, where its unique profile and performance in flight captivate spectators.
